Yesterday I had a fun afternoon hanging out with my friend Chris Irwin of the Mid-Atlantic Climbers, helping with the MAC information table at Sportrock's "Beat the Heat" bouldering competition. The gym put on a great show as usual, with lots of fun looking problems and an awesome dj to keep the crowd's energy high. We had lots of visitors to the table, and I was happy to see a few familiar faces as well as finally meet others that I had only talked to online.
Fall is a busy season for the Mid-Atlantic Climbers, and these next few months seem to be especially stacked with events. They will be hosting four Adopt-A-Crag events, three in Maryland and one in Virginia, as well as a happy hour to benefit a climbing area at the Red River Gorge. The dates for the events are as follows:
9/8/12- Ilchester, MD
9/22/12- Greene Turtle, Olney, MD (happy hour)
9/29/12- Carderock, MD
10/20/12- Great Falls, VA
11/10/12- Northwest Branch, MD
All four of the Adopt-A-Crags will be great opportunities to come out and help with trail maintenance and trash pickup at some of our favorite climbing areas. They're also a perfect way to meet new friends, score some new gear, and hang around afterward for some fun climbing.
The happy hour at Greene Turtle in Olney is actually an all day event (11 a.m. to 1 a.m.). For every table that shows up with one of the MAC flyers, the restaurant will donate 20% of the proceeds, which will in turn be given to the Friends of Muir Valley to help them meet the high costs of keeping climbing accessible there.
As usual, any volunteers are appreciated at any of these events, with no commitment to join. For more information check out the Mid-Atlantic Climbers website, or find them on Facebook and Twitter.
Hope to see you out there!
